The Lives of Man is a relatively short treatise by Imam al-Haddad, yet it is remarkable for its ability to engage the hearts of readers and awaken them, providing a piercing reminder of our origins, our present, and our future. Soundly based on the Qur’an and Hadith, this book guides us through the various stages that mankind traverses, detailing the journey of the soul from its initial covenant with Allah (swt) to its ultimate destination of either the Garden or the Fire. A Muslim should be aware of each of these stages, with the ultimate aim of being better prepared for the eternal life, returning to Allah (swt) in a state that is pleasing to Him.
In this monthly class, Shaykh Abdul Karim Yahya will guide attendees through The Lives of Man, covering each stage of our existence with a special focus on what we can do now to improve our spiritual states and strengthen our relationship with Allah (swt):
- The First Life: Life before Conception
- The Second Life: Dunya (the Lower World)
- The Third Life: The Intermediate Realm (Barzakh)
- The Fourth Life: Judgment Day
- The Fifth Life: The Fire and the Garden
NOTE: This course is entirely FREE and dinner will be served, but donations would be gratefully appreciated. Please consider donating (even if it’s a small amount) to help us continue our programs. ABOUT IMAM AL-HADDAD
Imam ‘Abdallah ibn ‘Alawi al-Haddad is widely believed to have been the spiritual mujaddid (“reviver”) of the 12th Islamic century. His breadth of knowledge and high spiritual state is clearly reflected in his writings, poetry, and books. Imam al-Haddad was born in Tarim, in the hills of Hadramaut, one of the southerly regions of the Arabian peninsula, and grew up in an environment where the accent was upon piety, frugality, and erudition. His lineage is traced back to the Prophet (saw) and his family, through Imam al-Husayn. His ancestors had for centuries produced generation after generation of great scholars and summoners to the Straight Path.
Imam al-Haddad’s writings are mostly concerned with establishing within his readers the firmest possible foundations for faith and certainty. He recognized the signs of his times, and of the times to come, and observed how people were drawing away from the Deen, exhibiting a reluctance to study and a diminishing inclination to seek spiritual growth. He therefore endeavored to produce concise, clear, and uncontroversial texts. His concern for brevity is manifest throughout his books, many of which are abbreviated adaptations of Imam al-Ghazali’s monumental Revival of the Religious Sciences (Ihya’ ‘Ulum al-Din). Ghazali himself had been the renewer of the 6th century.
Imam al-Haddad died in 1132 AH, having spent his life bringing people to their Lord through his oral and written teaching, and his exemplary life. He was buried in a simple grave in the cemetery of Tarim.
